SAN DIEGO, CA (August 27, 2024) – Today, the County Board of Supervisors took a historic step by approving a resolution to support the California Legislative Black Caucus' 2024 Reparations Legislative Package. This decision underscores the Board's commitment to addressing historical injustices and advancing equity for African American communities through several bills that will directly impact San Diego County.
The California Legislative Black Caucus' 2024 Reparations Legislative Package aims to address the lasting effects of slavery, segregation, and systemic racism through a total of 13 comprehensive bills across several categories , including civil rights, educational initiatives, healthcare access, criminal justice reform, and business investment.
Supervisor Monica Montgomery Steppe , who championed this item, emphasized the importance of the resolution, stating, "It is no secret that our County carries the stain of historical racism and discrimination against the Black community. As a member of the Reparations Task Force, it's my obligation to support and uplift policies that address the multifaceted dimensions of this history. Reparations are about repair and ensuring we don't go backwards, and I'm grateful to the California Legislative Black Caucus and my colleagues for supporting measures that initiate those actions."
The resolution received broad support from community leaders, advocacy groups, and residents. Local genealogist and community leader, Yvette Porter Moore remarked, "Today's decision by the Board of Supervisors is a powerful statement in unity with the Descendants of U.S. Chattel Slavery in our community. This resolution is a recognition of our collective responsibility to rectify the wrongs of the past and create a more equitable society.
