The Office of County Supervisor Monica Montgomery Steppe is currently accepting applications for internship opportunities for college-enrolled students. This is a valuable professional development opportunity for students with an interest in public administration, community and economic development, public safety, social services, or government communications.

Interns will work closely with District 4 staff in the areas of policy, community engagement, and communications, and will gain hands-on experience serving the residents of San Diego County’s District 4. They will learn about the Supervisor’s priorities, office operations, and county governance. This internship offers meaningful exposure to local government and is designed to build relevant skills for future careers in public service, nonprofit leadership, or advocacy.

 

 Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducting policy research and assisting with legislative and programmatic initiatives
  • Supporting communications and outreach efforts, including drafting materials and managing constituent correspondence
  • Assisting with general office tasks and database management
  • Attending community events and engaging with residents, local leaders, and stakeholders
  • Supporting planning and execution of public programs and initiatives

The Internship will take place in-person at the County Administration Center, 1600 Pacific Highway, San Diego, CA 92101

Hours:

Internships are up to 20 hours per week during the Fall and Spring semester/quarter. Students interested must be available during regular business hours (Monday-Friday, 9:00AM-5:00PM) with occasional evening and weekend availability for community events.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Interest in public service, policy, community engagement, public relations, or nonprofit work.
  • Ability to communicate with community members and collaborate with a variety of teams.
  • Proficiency in with Microsoft Office Suite (particularly Excel, Word, and Outlook) preferred.
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor in a fast-paced, community-facing environment.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and exercising integrity.
